About Us

Callowie Poll Merino’s is located on Richard & Jacquie’s property “Mallee Downs”.

Mallee Downs is located in the Lowan Vale area of the Tatiara council in the Upper South East of South Australia.
Set in a 450mm rainfall area and soils that are sandy loam over clay with heavier clay flats, Richard and Jacquie run 1000 ewes on their property and have been passionate and tireless working towards improving the quality of their Poll Merinos. They concentrate on the total sheep without compromise for short term opportunistic gain, and while progress is a little slower along Callowies Poll Merinos Driveway Signwith recognition, it ensures they have sound, highly productive and reliable genetics that are repeatable in clients’ flocks.
Arguably, Callowie Poll Merinos could be described as some of the most under-valued in the state, but 2010 saw them sell out of rams through increased demand. With the support of objective measurement data and the services of classer/consultant Paul Cousins, Callowie is producing sound structured, plain bodied and easy doing sheep with a covering of soft handling, free growing wools; these having low CV and SD figures in the productive and profitable 19.5 to 21 micron range.
Richard Halliday has defined the stud’s breeding objectives as “Conformation, Constitution, Covering, Carcase & Consistency”. Excellence in these areas is the platform for the Callowie breeding program. Select infusions of top genetics are made when appropriate.

Mallee Downs, home of Callowie Poll Merinos are situated 11km on the right hand side along the Ngarkat Highway (formally Pinnaroo Rd) when travelling from the Duke’s Highway.
